"Putting God On Hold" (Luke 9:39) |
"But he said, Lord let me first go and bury my father." (Luke 9:39 As He made His final trip to Jerusalem Jesus’ imperative to a potential follower was “follow me. Jesus reply was the above text. Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you go and proclaim the kingdom of God. Wasn’t this callous of Jesus? Didn’t he sympathize with the man and his family? A service person is allowed by the U. S. to travel thousand of miles to be with his family at death. Would Jesus do less than the military? Why would the Master say, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead." The man’s father was not dead. This was a figurative way of indicating that he would join Jesus on the death of his father. It could be years away. He put God on Hold. Do you like it when the airline, the bus company, some busy entrepreneur puts you on hold and stays away interminably long? How it frets us. How often though do we put the Risen Lord on hold? I would love to be with Jesus, but… He calls us to prayer but we got up to late. Oh how often have I been guilty. A thousand things push prayer aside and take precedence. He calls us to church but I’m so tired on Sunday morning. I’ve got company and can’t come. It’s too rainy outside. I’ve got to go to Aunt Lucy’s house. I don’t have any clothes to wear. Jesus calls us to a thousand duties. Lord it’s good to hear your voice. Yes I’ll do all of that as soon as I finish what I am doing. Putting God on Hold? Are you quilty? Remember the hymn writer’s imperative, Jesus calls us o’er the tumult Of our life’s mild restless, sea. Day by day his sweet voice soundeth Saying, Christian follow me. Be Blessed! The Late A. Roger Williams "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God..." (I John 4:7) |
